Riddle of the Week
Every dawn begins with me
At dusk I’ll be the first you see
And daybreak couldn’t come without
What midday centers all about
Daises grow from me, I’m told
And when I come, I end all cold
But in the sun I won’t be found
Yet still, each day I’ll be around
Bring the solution to the riddle in to Mr. Howe
by Friday for extra credit

Autism Awareness Month
A group of students in class has been working on an
enrichment project to develop activities in honor of Autism Awareness
Month. As part of their work, they
created a bulletin board in the front display case at school and have been
making and selling beautiful puzzle piece ribbons. All of their proceeds are being donated to
Autism Speaks, and they have raised close to $100 already!
If you would like to buy a ribbon (they are
$2), please send in your donation, and we will send home your ribbon.
A huge thank you to Kristen Wark who has done a lot to help
the group put together their project.

Summary:
“Gulf Spill Super Heroes”
The text, “Gulf
Spill Super Heroes”, is a fascinating expository text that discusses the Deep Water
oil spill which occurred in April of 2010. The Gulf of Mexico oil spill was
incredibly dangerous to the ocean, fishermen, and animals. Volunteers, scientists, first responders, veterinarians,
and many agencies needed to collaborate to help stop the spill and help clean
up the community and environment.
Because the oil
spill was becoming a dangerous hazard, people collaborated to find ways to fix
and clean up the oil. Fishermen were losing money because the animals they
needed were affected by the oil.
Engineers repaired the well, but still needed to clean up the mess. Responders, including NASA, used the view from the sky to see where the
oil was coming from. Volunteers dedicated their time to
help the community and the animals that were affected by the oil spill. Scientists used the SWORD to scoop up the
large clumps of oil.
Workers, volunteers,
scientists, veterinarians, and many agencies worked as hard as they could to help
the animals, fishermen, the communities around the spill, and to get the oil
out of the water and clean up the mess and environment.
